- Multiple Olympic medalists have had their medals fall apart on them.
- The Olympic comittee has been investigating with "maximum attention."
- Three medals have broken so far (that we know of) belonging to Alysa Liu, Breezy Johnson, and Justus Strelow.
You know that feeling when you've won an Olympic medal and then it breaks apart in your hands? Me neither, but it's a thing that's happening with surprising frequency over at the 2026 Olympic Games!
Over the weekend, Team USA figure skater Alysa Liu won gold and then revealed her medal broke while she was jumping up and down. "I was just jumping up and down, as one does to celebrate, and it just dropped," she told Overtime. "It just literally fell off of the ribbon. It got very scratched up… pretty dented."
"I actually liked it when it was off the ribbon, but that’s not allowed," she added. "I had to give it in. I was like, 'Can’t you just fix this one?' I’m attached. But it’s OK, I’m detached. Just like it was."
Meanwhile, Olympic skier Breezy Johnson's medal also broke (and she told reporters "Do not jump in them. I was jumping in excitement and it broke") AND Justus Strelow from the German biathlon team's medal broke.
On February 9, Chief Games Operations Officer Andrea Francisi said officials were "fully aware of the situation," and "We’re going to pay particular attention to the medals and obviously this is something that [we want] everything [to] be perfect when the medal is handed over, because this is probably one of the most important moments for the athletes. So we’re working on it."
A day later, organizers said they investigating with "maximum attention," and now it...looks like the problem has been fixed?
Spokesman Luca Casassa said, via The Guardian, "Following reports of issues affecting a small number of medals, the organising committee immediately reviewed the matter, working closely with the State Mint, which produced the medals.A solution has been identified, and a targeted fix has been put in place. Athletes whose medals have been affected are encouraged to return them through the appropriate channels so that they can be promptly repaired and returned.Milano Cortina 2026 remains fully committed to ensuring that medals, which represent the pinnacle of every athlete’s journey, meet the highest standards of quality and care."
Keep an eye on the medals going forward!
